Why it matters

We look beyond stars: what problem it solves, whether it creates real utility, and what makes its approach worth noticing.

Last 90 days

Problem

Provides an official mobile client for the Music Assistant server to control multi-room playback queues and stream local audio on Android and iOS.

Practical value

Supports cross-platform playback management, multi-room group control, and integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for practical daily use.

Innovation / differentiation

Built using Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose Multiplatform to share a single codebase while delivering native audio and streaming capabilities across devices.

Leverage potential

Acts as the official ecosystem client connecting directly to the Music Assistant server, bridging mobile phones, car systems, and multi-room audio hardware.

Why now

Developed as the Kotlin Multiplatform ecosystem matures and user demand grows for native mobile experiences in home audio control.

More about it

The Music Assistant Mobile app is the official cross-platform client for Music Assistant Server, built using Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) and Compose Multiplatform for Android and iOS.

The app offers controls to manage playback queues, change active output targets, and handle dynamic player grouping across your server's audio providers. Using the Sendspin streaming protocol over WebRTC or WebSocket, mobile devices can function as active players receiving FLAC, Opus, and PCM audio directly from the server.

It features deep OS-level integration for multi-device and in-car use. On Android, it supports background media playback, notifications, Android Auto, and voice commands via Google Assistant. On iOS, it integrates with Control Center, Lock Screen controls, and Apple CarPlay. Note that a running Music Assistant Server instance is required, and offline playback is explicitly not supported.
