Why it matters
We look beyond stars: what problem it solves, whether it creates real utility, and what makes its approach worth noticing.
Problem
Addresses the need for an intuitive, interactive web interface to manage and view multi-cluster resources.
Practical value
Offers both in-cluster and desktop running modes, supporting logs, terminal access, resource editing, and plugin extension with high utility.
Innovation / differentiation
As a generic Kubernetes UI, it combines traditional resource viewing with permission-based UI controls and cancellable operations, offering moderate innovation.
Leverage potential
Supports extension via a plugin mechanism and is part of Kubernetes SIG UI, facilitating community integration and ecosystem reuse.
Why now
With multi-cluster and containerized operations being widespread, the demand for lightweight, customizable cluster management interfaces remains consistent.
Community activity
In the last 90 days there were 537 new issues and 926 pull requests; the bounded issue/PR samples include 36 issue authors and 40 PR contributors, with at least 4 releases.
Maintainer responsiveness
The 96-issue window sample had a 40% close rate, and the 94-pull-request sample had a 40% merge rate. Maintainer-response observations covered 32% of that issue sample, with a 0% response rate and median first response of not enough data.
Key highlights
- View and manage Kubernetes resources through a generic web UI
- Run in-cluster or as a desktop application on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Connect to multiple clusters with logs, terminal, and resource editing
Quick start

Where it runs
Runs locally
Difficulty
Medium — some setup needed
- 01Prepare a working kubeconfig containing the Kubernetes clusters you want to access.
- 02Use the Windows, macOS, or Linux desktop app for local use, or follow the documentation to deploy Headlamp in-cluster.
- 03After connecting, use resource views, logs, terminal, and editing features according to the current Kubernetes RBAC permissions.
Best for
- Teams that want data on their own servers
- Developers who want to try it on their machine
- People who prefer Docker deploys
More about it
Headlamp is a generic Kubernetes web UI under Kubernetes SIG UI. It can be deployed inside a cluster or used as a desktop application on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Beyond listing and viewing resources, it supports multiple clusters, logs, container exec, resource editing, and create, update, or delete operations. Available actions reflect Kubernetes RBAC permissions, and a plugin system extends the interface. Users who already have a kubeconfig can try the desktop application against existing clusters before choosing an in-cluster deployment.
