Why it matters
We look beyond stars: what problem it solves, whether it creates real utility, and what makes its approach worth noticing.
Problem
Cluster troubleshooting often scatters tasks across multiple tools; this project attempts to address this fragmentation by combining a local-first desktop workspace with an MCP server.
Practical value
It offers a comprehensive set of features including multi-cluster management, live resource browsing, log streaming, terminals, port forwarding, and Helm support.
Innovation / differentiation
The key differentiator is the built-in MCP server allowing AI agents to collaborate with engineers using the same backend capabilities, all via direct local cluster connection.
Leverage potential
Built on Tauri v2, React 19, and Rust, it provides flexibility for both lightweight desktop execution and containerized multi-user web deployment.
Why now
It arrives at a time when AI-assisted operations and local-first tooling are gaining traction, aligning with engineers' demands for security and smart collaboration.
Community activity
In the last 90 days there were 314 new issues and 463 pull requests; the bounded issue/PR samples include 5 issue authors and 5 PR contributors, with 31 releases.
Maintainer responsiveness
The 100-issue window sample had a 75% close rate, and the 100-pull-request sample had a 100% merge rate. Maintainer-response observations covered 88% of that issue sample, with a 0% response rate and median first response of not enough data.
Key highlights
- Multi-cluster context management and hotbar switching with color coding
- Live resource browsing and YAML editing with schema validation, dry-run diffs, and server-side apply
- Log streaming with container filters, previous instance logs, and export options

Runs locally
Difficulty
Easy — follow the steps
- 01Download the binary for macOS, Linux, or Windows from GitHub Releases, or run the Docker image for web deployment.
- 02Launch srelens to automatically load and organize cluster contexts from your local kubeconfig.
- 03(Optional) Enable the MCP server in Settings or run
srelens --mcp-stdioin your terminal to connect AI agents.
Best for
- Teams that want data on their own servers
- Developers who want to try it on their machine
- People who prefer Docker deploys
More about it
srelens is an open-source Kubernetes desktop workspace built with Tauri v2, React 19, and a Rust backend using kube-rs and tokio. It relies on local kubeconfig credentials to communicate directly with Kubernetes API servers without routing traffic through an external service.
The application integrates daily operation utilities, including pod exec sessions, privileged node shells, port forwarding, Helm release management, and a tool manager for kubectl and krew. High-risk operations such as scaling down, node draining, or resource deletion are gated behind interactive confirmation prompts.
srelens also includes a built-in Model Context Protocol (MCP) server generated from its core capabilities. Compatible AI clients can interact with clusters over stdio or loopback HTTP under explicit confirmation and RBAC permissions.
